Origin and PlantationIndia Monsooned Malabar is a coffee with very low acidity and a particularly full-bodied flavour. Its aroma is mellow and is elegantly rounded off by subtle fruity notes. It is grown in the Malabar region in southern India at altitudes between 900 and 1,500 metres. There, the traditional ‘monsooning’ process is used, which gives the coffee its unique character. After dry processing, the beans are hulled and spread out in thin layers in well-ventilated warehouses. Over several weeks, they are exposed to the warm, humid monsoon climate and are regularly turned and rearranged to ensure even ripening and prevent mould. Through this process, the beans swell, lose their colour and develop their typical, mild flavour.Character and TasteExceptionally full-flavoured, very little acidity combined with a strong aroma. This coffee is fruity, delicately herbal and has a rather full body.ParticularitiesIndia produces washed and unwashed coffees (called "cherry"). The washed Arabica is labelled "plantation arabica" and the washed Robusta is called "Parchment Robusta". For the production of Monsooned coffee, the coffee beans are put into layers of 10 - 15 cm and spread in a well-ventilated warehouse. The coffee beans are exposed to the humid wind of the monsoon over a period of 12 to 16 weeks and are regularly turned over.
