Formosa (Taiwan)
Taiwan is renowned for its world-famous Oolong teas and unique green teas.
These teas, available in various qualities, are primarily exported to China,
Japan, and the USA, with smaller quantities reaching Europe.
The name
“Formosa,” derived from the Portuguese meaning “beautiful island,” was
historically used to refer to Taiwan. However, since 1885, the name Taiwan,
meaning “Terrace Bay,” has become the official designation for the
island.
Much like Sri Lanka, which is known by its tea name Ceylon, the
term “Formosa” continues to hold significant importance in the global tea
industry. Despite the fact that tea plants were first introduced to the island
only around 1650, Taiwan has developed a rich tea culture, further enhanced by
the influx of tea masters during the Cultural Revolution.
Taiwan's northern and northeastern mountain regions are home to some of the
finest Oolong teas, with the Nantou province recognized as the primary growing
area for traditional Oolong teas.
