Tea has been cultivated on Java and Sumatra since 1826. Plucking takes place year-round, however the preconditions differ between the two islands. The rainy season on Java takes place in winter and, when it is over, the best tea is plucked. Sumatra, located directly below the Equator, has more even climatic conditions so that the time of year hardly has an impact. Indonesian teas are strong and dark in nature, similar to the Assam and are often mixed with this tea. Approximately 135,000 tons are produced each year and 71,000 tons of those are exported, mainly to the USA, Pakistan and Egypt.
