Tea Specialities from Japan & Southern India
Over the past few months, our tea tasters have once again been roaming the
globe — not only in search of exciting new discoveries for our upcoming main
catalogue, but also to source exceptional specialities and true rarities for
connoisseurs of fine tea.
We would like to introduce you to two
remarkable regions of origin from which we have just received freshly plucked
teas: Japan and southern India.
Look
forward to three first Shinchas of the season, as well as two hand-picked
specialities from the Nilgiri Hills, conveniently packed in
500 g bags.
Japanese Shinchas
The Shincha harvest marks the beginning of the Japanese tea season and is a
special highlight for tea lovers around the world. “Shincha”
literally means “new tea” and refers to the very first
pluckings of the year. Depending on the climate and region, the harvest starts
between mid and late April and can continue into early June. This first flush
green tea is characterized by its especially vibrant aroma, fine sweetness, and
distinctive umami flavour. Shincha is produced only in limited quantities and is
highly sought after for its freshness and quality.
South Indian white and green teas
South Indian tea is less well-known than Darjeeling or Assam, yet it plays a
key role in many blends due to its fine, medium-bodied aroma. In the high
altitudes of the Nilgiri mountains, tea plants thrive under ideal climatic
conditions: cool, humid weather, fertile soils, and regular fog.
The Tea
Studio has taken this as an opportunity to produce outstanding specialty
teas that are significantly different from mass-market black teas. The
leaves, grown at 1,800 meters and carefully selected, come exclusively from
small farmers who are paid multiple times the usual rate for the high quality of
their harvest. The tea is then refined in Tea Studio’s modern facility. Each tea
was freshly made to our order – we selected two exceptional qualities from this
outstanding project:
