Verso la fine del XVII secolo è stato notato che i nativi del Sud Africa tagliavano i rami del Rooibos, un particolare arbusto, li seccavano al sole riducendoli poi in piccoli pezzi, da cui ricavano un infuso. Nel 1900 la popolazione bianca rimase cosí affascinata dal sapore fruttato e dolce di questo tè che presto se ne cominció a parlare anche in Europa. Oggi questi arbusti non crescono piú selvatici, anche se vengono coltivati come se ancora lo fossero, poiché la crescente domanda eccede il quantitativo che si otterrebbe lasciandola crescere in modo naturale, senza coltivarla. Un buon tè Rooibos puó essere identificato dal suo colore di rubino e dal suo sapore aromatico e morbido, quasi dolciastro, di terra.
