Descendants of the oldest coffee plants were found in the Ethiopian Highlands. Today, the country is the most important exporter of Arabica. Some 12 million of its citizens earn their living by growing coffee in mostly small peasant entities. Ethiopian coffee is not easy to describe. The coffee lover experiences an impressive variety in taste when drinking Ethiopia Sidamo. Its particularly spicy strong aroma is accompanied by a heavy chocolate fullness. A very rich body with a slightly flowery note contributes to this coffee's richness.

Since only the ripe coffee cherries are picked, the entire plantation can sometimes be harvested up to seven times - by manual work. Coffee lovers have a special preference for the aromatic top coffees from Kenya, featuring a fine acidity, an unusual berry-like fruit and a full body. The first trees were brought from Ethiopia to Kenya in the 19th century. Today, coffee is cultivated on 1,300 large plantations and by 600,000 small producers in cooperatives. Our Kenya Kiundi is a top coffee with a full body. A first class coffee with a fruity chocolate aroma. In high-quality blends, Kenya Kiundi is to be found as an acidity carrier.

With a market share of about 1.5%, Kenya is considered - on a quantity basis - to be a minor producer on the world market. However, once you consider the quality and the extraordinary coffee character, Kenya belongs to one of the best producers at any time. Kenyan coffee beans feature a very firm structure and require more heat than other coffees during the roasting process. This is due to the fact that the coffee plants in Kenya are cultivated at high altitudes of up to 1,200 m where coffee grows very slowly. Normal even grounds are selected and traded in different grade of goods. Most exports receive an AB classification, while top qualities receive an AA title. Due to their rarity, Kenyan Pearl Beans are an absolute specialty. If the coffee tree cannot deliver sufficient nutrients to the coffee cherries that grow at the very end of the bush, the bush develops only one bean in the cherry, a so-called pearl bean. This individual bean collects so much strength and grows so slowly that it becomes more aromatic than a flat bean. Our Pearl Beans are from the Kiundi region and are hand picked. An experienced roast master has to use all his capability and skills, as far as roasting is concerned, since pearl beans are of rare beauty. If he is successful in roasting, the typical chocolate-like character and mild spicy fullness of Kenyan coffee will develop.
